Caracals: July Update

It's been a busy few months for our four caracals, and whilst Cleo and Medusa get all the attention on their daily walks with volunteers, the main news of late concerns both Yoda and Godiva.

Unfortunately Godiva has been on the end of some rough treatment from Yoda and recently had to visit the vet with a broken foot. Yoda became a little feisty and the two caracals, who normally live content with each other, had a bit of a scrap. We immediately took her to the vets where we were told that her leg would have to be amputated. But thankfully that was not the case in the end and Godiva pulled through safe and sound. She returned from the vets with a bandaged leg and she is currently recovering in her own temporary camp and will soon join the others when she's back to full strength.

Yoda on the other hand has now become a candidate for release in the future, which is fantastic for him and although we're all delighted that he's wild enough to go back into the wild, we'll miss his amazing 10 foot leaps to catch his food!

Last month, we also took in two baby caracals that were found wandering around Maerua Mall in a Windhoek! The security guards spotted them without their mother and contacted our staff who were doing their weekly shop in the mall at the time! After consulting with the SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) they were brought back to N/a'an ku se. Now named Rocky and Ivy, the fluffy felines won't be around long though and will be released as soon as possible back into the wild once they're a bit older and able to fend for themselves.
